11 Year Old Boy Bombs Nazi Factory in WW II

A Review of

Shepherd Moss, Jay's Magic Bomber (Frederick MD: Publish America, 2007)
                           ISBN 1-4241-8657-9 85 pages

Reviewer:  Forrest W. Schultz

Shepherd Moss is well qualified to write about an eleven year old boy living during World War II (in the year 1944) having an adventure with an airplane because he himself was eleven years old during World War II (in 1944) and his life's work has revolved around airplanes and he is a good writer who now finally during his retirement is having the opportunity to do some writing. Jay's Magic Bomber is a children's story, which like all well-written children's stories, can be appreciated even more by adults than children.

The magic bomber part of the story is a fantasy which happens in the real world (not in a fantasy world) by means of a magical device created in ancient times which has been dormant since then and which is brought to life by a boy named Jay who is an ardent fan of the Army Air Corps and is very frustrated at not being permitted to be a pilot because he is too young. The adventure with the Magic Bomber does not happen until the very end of the story. Before that time he has several ordinary boy adventures trying to deal with Billy The Bully and trying to help his friend Roger overcome his shyness and trying to get his mother to allow him to have a newspaper route. And he has fun collecting WW II memorabilia and in finding and donating scrap metal to help the war effort and in watching WW II adventure movies.

The story and characters are interesting, and are well situated within the historical context of The Second World War. There is, however, one anachronism. See if you can find it when you read the story, which I encourage you to do and to get your sons or grandsons to do if they are somewhere around 11 years old.

Shepherd Moss, together with his wife and fellow-writer, Betty Moss, are members of the Heritage Writers Group of Henry County, GA, which is south of Atlanta. Henry County and the other "Southside" counties are currently experiencing a boom in all the arts, including the literary arts. This book is but one of many being written by brand new authors of all ages living in this burgeoning arts scene.
