The fantasy created by Katie Daniels is populated not only by ordinary humans who dwell on terra firma but also by a special group of humans who are adapted to dwell in terra aqua (the ocean). In fact, these aquamen have even named their world, Terra Aqua, and they refer to our dwelling place as The Upper World. The story describes the distinctive features of the aquamen but says little about the theoretical basis for the development of these features. The emphasis of the story is upon the cultural clashes which develop with the Upper World, both at the individual level and in the diplomacy between the respective governments.

The story focuses upon the brilliant scientist Arcalla Poscoa, who heads the National Council of Terra Aqua. He is preparing for his mission of establishing diplomatic relations with the Upper World when he falls in love with Sashian Rutherford, a Upper World woman. The rocky road of their romance provides good insights into the cultural clashes between the two worlds. One of the most important of these clashes concerns genderal and family issues, which makes the story especially significant for those interested in the current discussions concerning "family values".
Most of the terra firma action in Quigley's Prophecy takes place in Mississippi, which is where Daniels lived for many years prior to her recent move to Grantville in Coweta County, which is on the Southside of Atlanta, Georgia. This book is the sequel to Below, which was published in 2004 as the first volume of a trilogy. The third volume, The Young Sharks, is now nearing completion and will probably be published either late this year (2009) or early next year (2010).

Daniels is a prolific writer who began publishing books at the turn of the century. Her first two -- The Starkville Brand (2001) and Perfect Town (2002) are works of general fiction. She has also written a romance novel, The Farmer and the Businesswoman, which was published in 2007.
Daniels was active in the local writers group in Port Gibson, MS. She has now joined the Coweta Writers Group and plans to be actively involved in the Coweta and Southside literary scenes. Information is available on her website www.katieldaniels. com.

UPDATE:  Unfortunately, for health reasons, Katie Daniels had to leave Coweta Co., so she is no longer with us, which has saddened me greatly!
